For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy
light shall we see light. Psalms 36:9
Having understood the meaning of intimacy, it’s also important to know that even as life comes through fellowship, so does revelation.
Like the Psalmist acknowledged,”For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see.” NLT
“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do
you say I am?”Peter answered, “You are the Messiah. Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. Mark 8:29-31
Here, Jesus hadn’t taught His disciples about the things that would happen to him until they knew He was the Messiah. Imagine you had two friends and one was closer to you than the
other, who would you tell the deepest things of your heart? The one closest to you, right?
The disciples had been with Jesus for a while but they had no revelation about the things to come concerning him. They only had a general knowledge about Him. This is exactly how some Christians relate with God but there’s more to God than the general knowledge you have about Him.
Fellowship of the Holy Spirit
You can only draw close to God and have an intimate relationship with the Father through fellowship with His Spirit, The Holy Spirit.
Apostle Paul made us understand something in his letter to the church at Corinth and Rome;
For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Romans 8:15
Now we have received, not the spirit of the
world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 1 Corinthians 2:12
Do you not know that your body is the temple (the very sanctuary) of the Holy Spirit Who lives within you, whom you have received [as a Gift] from God? You are not your own.1
Corinthians 6:19
Notice he mentioned that we have received the Spirit of God and the Holy Spirit lives in us. So when did this happen? The Bible says we were sealed with the Holy Ghost of promise when we believed
And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. Ephesians 1:13
[NLT)
So having known this, let’s look further into the reason why Paul said we have received the Spirit of God in the book of Corinthians…that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God
But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 2:10-11.
There is something called “the things of God’. This is different from the usual things people know about God. That is why it can only be accessible through the Spirit of God by revelation or what we call inspiration.
What are these hidden things? The things that Paul was talking about here encapsulates different dimensions in God, in which the key holder is the Holy Spirit.
One of the things of God is the mind of God and knowing the mind of God is knowing the will of God. In order to walk and make decisions according to the will of God, there is a need to access the mind of God.
Many believers follow trends, walk aimlessly and are without clue as to what the emphasis of God for their lives are.
Why is that?
This is because, they don’t fellowship with the Holy Spirit enough nor do they engage Him in their day-to-day activities. They don’t get to know God personally. They just follow the patterns that have been laid down by other people and that is wrong. As previously read, the things of God including the mind of God can only be given or revealed through the Holy Spirit.
God knows everything about you, and He has the blueprint for your life and He wants to show you because Apostle Paul wrote that it is kept for our glory, so it not hidden from us but for us.
So this would take us to, how do we
fellowship with the Holy Spirit?
It’s important that we know that our
relationship with the Holy Spirit should be
personal, affectionate and experiential.
Fellowship with God requires spending quality time with God. If you desire to have a genuine relationship with God, you will have to go beyond a daily routine of prayer and reading of God’s of word just for the sake of it.
Fellowship with God is staying with God in
the place of prayer and the word consistently with zeal in your heart to know your Father more. It is communicating with God with your
words. Just like when you want to get to know someone and get to be their friend, you talk with them regularly. So also you must communicate with God all the time.
Be sincere with God, serve him with all
integrity and sincerity. The more you spend time with God and obey him, the more He opens up to you and makes His will known to you.
Then you can say with the Apostles of the early church…For in him we live, and move, and have our being…
And Jesus can say of you… But one thing is
needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
